Hospital Gala Bringing New Technology

Going Once, Going Twice, Gone will be the paper bid sheets found at silent auctions in this area, with a new era of technology replacing them at the upcoming Hospital Foundation gala. The “Moonlight in the Garden” event on Friday, April 9 will be the first-ever in which a Decatur County organization uses the BidPal auction system. It promises to add an element of fun and intrigue to the black tie optional fundraiser. Most importantly, area businesses and organizations can still participate and promote their offerings though the units.

According to Hospital Foundation Director, David Fry, the BidPal system is basically a wireless network set-up within the event facility that uses iPhone type units which attendees carry during the evening. These devices are where bids are entered and purchases tracked. The unit not only has the auction catalogue but also the capabilities of letting the bidder know when they’ve been outbid. For item donors, the business or organization name appears on the unit offering additional promotion. Fry added that special sponsorships are available that allow for the business logo to appear periodically throughout the evening!

“The BidPal Network is based in Indianapolis and their innovative system was recently featured in an article in the Indianapolis Business Journal.” Fry said. “BidPal has served a number of fundraisers in that area as well as Chicago, New York and others and came highly recommended.”

So why use BidPal? “In a normal silent auction, participants place their auction bids on paper sheets, walk away and forget to return to see if they’ve been outbid or just don’t want to take time from socializing to do so. With BidPal, attendees can stay connected to auction activity throughout the evening no matter where they might be in the facility,” Fry said. “The BidPal experience shows that this connection to the auction results in a better return for the organization and a bit more excitement for those attending. We think those attending will have fun with it.”

Fry noted that the Hospital Foundation is still seeking donations to the gala event, particularly those with a focus on the outdoors or gardening in general. Donations support the work of the Foundation and the Hospital and as such are tax deductible as allowed by law. Individuals or businesses with questions about the auction or event are encouraged to contact the Hospital Foundation office at 663-1220 or visit the gala website at http://www.dcmh.net/gala.

Which do you think is better for your community...having your local government spend $10000 in your community or having them spend it in some other community? Seems like a pretty basic concept, right? If local money stays local, it should be more beneficial locally.

Here's an example. Let's say your city government receives a pamphlet or a phonecall from a "health screening" company 100 miles away and it toutes the longterm savings of getting "health screenings" for all your city employees. Sounds good, right? So your city government agrees to have them come and they do a great job of finding any potential problems. They, then leave and your city government pays the $2000 fee.

Doesn't seem like such an unbeneficial decision until you realize that there was the option of hiring another local company that could have performed the exact same service. So, would you rather your local government spend $2000 with a local company or $2000 on an outside company?

I think one of the best ways to stabilize and encourage a local economy is to ensure that city officials and local governments are spending your tax dollars as close to home as possible.

If you are trying to sell your home, you may want to consider “Staging” in order to make it more attractable to potential buyers.

What is “Staging” and why is it so important? Let me explain.

Staging is what potential buyers are EXPECTING. Staging is the art of decorating a home to sell quickly and for top dollar. It is hard for busy buyers of today’s fast paced world to see past the clutter and oversized furniture in a room. Buyers are wanting to walk into a home and think, “I could move in tomorrow.”

Here are a few simple things you can do to have a show ready home:

1.	Get rid of the CLUTTER! – We all have it and remember less is better!

2.	Clean your windows and open up the blinds. – Buyers want to see lots of light.

3.	Remove items from Kitchen Counters – Buyers want to picture themselves in the kitchen but not with all of your things already on the counter.

4.	Clean the carpets – The cost of renting a carpet cleaner or having carpets professionally clean is well worth the money.

5.	Neutralize the color of your home – Get rid of dark rooms or bright paint colors.

6.	Bathrooms can be a deal breaker! – Keep out only the most necessary items and group them together. Coordinate towels in 1 or 2 colors only.

7.	Curb Appeal is always the first impression. – No signs of garbage cans, leaky roofs or gutter. Keep lawn freshly cut. If possible repaint front door and trim.

The most important thing to remember is that a how you live in your home is very different from how a buyer wants to see your home. If you want to get the most from your home then meet with a Certified Home Stager. You will be able to see the difference in your home and in your wallet.

Fitness Any Time: Resolutions Revived

In honor of the millions of New Year Resolutions that are now dead after two short months, let's do our annual resolution fitness/health check up. Been getting to the gym 2-3 days per week? Eating smaller portions 4-5 times per day? Lose that extra weight that has been holding you back from back from a happier and more active life? For approximately 90% of us resolution makers, the word "resolution" will be just another synonym for "failure" by year's end. Each year millions make these healthy resolutions with very little commitment or a faulty support system in place that results in a poor effort year after year.

Let me throw some knowledge your way. Approximately 64% of Hoosiers are overweight or obese (Center for Disease Control). Over 95% of home gym users do not stick with their programs (National Institute of Health), thus their treadmill becomes an expensive clothes hanger. And 70% of new gym members do not continue their progress after 3 months (International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association). Yet year after year, we all resolve that this will be the year that fitness becomes a priority. In order to be one of the healthy success stories, it's important to identify the reasons that this small percentage of health seekers are victorious over the long run.

The two biggest reasons that people get lost during their quest to a healthier and happier life are.....wait for it.....lack of MOTIVATION and lack of RESULTS. This isn't ground breaking news, but it is important that people have a clear picture of their motivation before they get started. BE SPECIFIC when setting goals. Instead of setting a vague goal like "I want to lose some weight," identify why you want to lose weight. Do you want to fit into those special pair of jeans? Will that weight loss allow you to play a game of touch football with your child? Or maybe you want to have a better body in attracting that special someone in your life. Whatever the reason, make sure you are SPECIFIC. If you aren't specific then you might lose the weight and still be dissatisfied.

Back to RESULTS. You need to exercise the rule of being SPECIFIC. Sound familiar? Many new health seekers will make the mistake of biting off more than they can chew. Is your goal to shed that extra 30-50 pounds? That is a great long term goal, but in order to stay motivated we need to break it down into manageable mini-goals. If this is your goal and you are currently doing little to no physical exercise, a better goal would be come in to the gym at 2-3 times for a month. As soon as you check off that goal, you can set another mini-goal like only eating out once a week. Soon your mini-goals will add up to your long term goal. These mini-goals will help keep you motivated when exercising isn't convenient or when that chocolate cake is calling your name.

When you are serious about identifying your own personal MOTIVATION so that you can stay on the path of fitness RESULTS, stop by Anytime Fitness so that I can help you jump start those resolutions before they get buried six feet under next to last year's resolutions. Don't delay on a better and healthier you. Call (812) 662-3055 today to set up an appointment with me so that I can help MOTIVATE you to achieve your desired RESULTS.

Eating Disorders In Men

That's right, eating disorders in men are there. Some start off as bad habits, others progress into much more serious issues.

The American Journal of Psychiatry found...
2%-3% of men diet all the time?
5%-14% of men deliberately vomit after eating?
12%-21% have a history of binge eating.

These disorders have been ignored in some part. Here are some reasons why.

1. Men tend not to discuss problems with other men as they feel it's a female issue.

2. Men are always working.

3. Men do work out, but they're not eating the right foods for energy and protein.

4. Men become too tired at the end of the work day and they just want to relax or go to bed.

5. Men also are embarrassed about this topic, as they think they are the "man of the house" and need to be tough.

6. Men have this perception that they need to have the "body builder" image and never communicate this perception to the women that love them.

So, eating right is not just a problem for busy women, its a problem for men as well. Men, with your hectic schedules, households to manage, and kids to raise, you really have to be diligent about eating right. You can do it!

I hate throwing things away that I know could be used for something else. I save breadties, I bag up plastic bags for the food pantry, I save all kinds of containers...I think I'm a little bit of a hoarder. I feel that, if there is another use for something, why not go ahead and reuse it. Yeah, usually the reused item isn't as polished or as manicured as its original purpose, but it does save resources and much of the time...not always, it saves us money.

This past month, my wife and I had our upstairs bathroom redone. It was a total gut, down to the lathe and the joists. I tried reusing or saving as many of the items that were ripped out as I could. The shower stall was reused, the toilet was reused, I saved the old shower doors, medicine cabinet and the vanity top and am still looking for a use for those.

One of the things I saved was the old drawers from the vanity. I didn't have anything specific in mind to do with them, but I saved them nonetheless. Well, the other day, I found my reuse for them. I decided to build a shelf for my son's room. Here are some before and after pictures of what my 4-year-old and I did with them...read more

We as parents are driven to give our kids the biggest, best, greatest of all things in this life. Usually that translates to big toys, big cars and big trips. Let me give you an example, though, why it is sometimes the smaller things that can be more rewarding when raising children.

Yesterday I took my oldest son to a small park to go sledding. We got our first descent accumulation and although the snow was not the ballmaking kind it did serve nicely for what we were about to do. I tied a rope to the end of the sled and pulled him over to the park, which was close to our house. He got to ride on his back "in style" the 2 blocks it takes to walk and thought that was pretty fun.

The hill we used as our "olympic bobsled run" was no longer than 50 feet and inclined maybe 8 feet. It just barely had enough incline to get us moving. But it didn't matter...in the eyes of my four year old, it was the Swiss Alps and our sled was the fastest in the land. He kept wanting to ride the sled backwards...read more

Two nights ago, I ran across an article written for DivineCaroline.Com. This website is geared toward women, but men can lurk if they want. Let's just say, I am comfortable with my estrogen levels enough to visit a site made for women.

Anyway, the article was a lament about this person's failed New Year's Resolutions, one being to quit smoking after 22 years. She mentioned all the pills and prescriptions she had tried in the past, without success. Here's the idea I shared that involved no pills, no cold turkey, and hopefully little withrawal.

(1)To quit any habit that you know is bad for you, starts by admitting its bad. If you don't believe smoking is harmful to you, you won't quit.

(2)The next step is taking an evaluation of your current smoking habits. Figure up how many cigarettes you smoke in one week? Now, make a chart with 3 columns and 52 rows. Put tomorrow's date in the first column. Date the following rows with a subsequent week. At the top of the second column, write down how many cigarettes you smoke in one week. Now, in each subsequent rows, subtract 5 cigarettes per week until you run out of cigarettes. So if you smoke 140 cigarettes per week, by week 28 you should be almost done smoking. If you smoke 280 per week, by week 52 you should be almost done smoking. Now in the third column, write down how many cigarettes you actually smoked during that previous week. This is most important column to fill up, and the most time consuming. You will have figure out how to keep track this part. One way to look at this last column is to see it as your acheivement chart. Week after week, you will begin to see that you can break this habit. If you fail one week, don't sweat it, just get back to the goals you set for yourself.

Here's basically how the chart should look when you get it set up.

Here's a blank chart if you don't want to create your own.

(3)Probably as important as any other step is to share this goal with someone you trust, someone who will hold you accountable. Find someone who will ask you once a month, "are you keeping with your goal". Having someone come alongside you and challenge you can be the final push toward quitting this nasty habit.

(4)Go acheive your goals.

This approach is designed to create an incremental decrease in your bad habit. Eliminating 5 cigarettes a week will be noticable over time, but should be doable, and hopefully the withdrawals will be manageable. Keep this chart in your pocket, or on your fridge, or on your mirror. Don't wait until the end of each week to eliminate your smokes...boy, you will grumpy if you do. Pick one cigarette a day and say to yourself..."this is the one I'm NOT going to smoke."

Last weekend, November 13 and 14, middle school students from Greensburg Jr. High School performed Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” for a delighted crowd of family and friends. A cast of more than fifty students participated, dancing and singing along to the mixed-up story of Alice, under the direction of Mrs. Heather Simpson.

In the musical, Alice dreamt her way into a fantasy world of un-birthday parties, crazy rabbits, snooty flowers, a suave caterpillar, a spiteful Queen of Hearts, and the incredibly forgetful Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Narrated by the three-part Cheshire cat, Lexi Ryle, Courtney Nelson, and Sydney Wettering, Alice walked through her upside-down journey. Alice periodically performed actions that abruptly changed her size, taking her from normal size (played by Allie Louder) to three-inches tall (played by Kacy Hamer) to so tall, her limbs hung out of a house (played by Sydney Reynolds). The girls each did an excellent job with their roles, animatedly portraying a very bewildered Alice.

Some highlights from the night included the following:
• Tweedle Dee (played by Kate Bausback) and Tweedle Dum (played by Kaylie Wood) performed a humorous number, “How D’ye Do & Shake Hands,” where they attempted to discover their true identities.
• A frantic rabbit (played by Mary Kate Porter) ran around the stage often, shouting, “I’m late!” This white bunny, truly characteristic of the Energizer Bunny, kept the crowd laughing.
• Throughout the show, various members of the chorus appeared in a variety of outfits – from a deck of cards to lobsters. The costumes and sets deserve high praise.
• The Queen of Hearts (played by Brooklyn Chance) led some of the cast, including Alice, in an intense game of “Simon Says.” This was one of my personal favorite moments, as Chance delivered a very dramatic presentation.

As the curtains closed, I imagine much celebration was had. Their months of hard work paid off, and they delivered a very enjoyable and entertaining show. Well done, GJHS.
