We have been hearing a lot on the risks of calicum supplements. I'm a person who does not believe in supplements, but that's just me.

The general RDA of calicum tends to be higher for women than men. Women need between 1000 and 1200 mg daily. A serving of milk is about 300 mg., so you should be drinking about 3 glasses a day because you will get some from the foods you eat.

What do you do if your lactose intolerant or just don't like milk? What if your counting calories and don't want to add more?

Here are my 10 tips to get more calicum

1. Say no to soda: High phosphate levels in your blood(which can be caused by drinking large quantities of soda) can take and prevent your bones from absorbing calicum.

2. Calicum is absorbed and used only when there is enough Vit. D in your body. A well- balanced diet should help in this. Also, don't forget sunlight is another source for absorbing some Vit. D.

3. Baked Beans: Ohter than protein, one cup has 154mg of calicum.

4. Many foods are now calicum fortified: You can find calicum fortified soy, almond and rice milk. One 8-oz glass of calicum fortified OJ is abut 300mg.

5. Salmon has about 181mg of calicum not to mention the omega-3 fatty acids.

6. Oatmeal: One cup has about 100-150mg of calicum and you can mix oatmeal into other foods like cakes, or meatloaf.

7. Veggies: Dark Green vegetables, especially spinach and broccoli. One serving of these vegetables have 100 mg of calicum. Use fresh spinach in place of iceburg lettuce in your salads.

8. Brazil Nuts and Almonds adds about 100mg of calicum and are an excellent snack for those on low-carb diets.

9. This is for the coffee drinkers: Go see Mike at MDL Coffee and Tea and get a large latte. This will help in providing half of your daily calicum, plus, they are really good. (You also won't break your budget as you are more likely to at big coffee chains.)

10. Don't forget about yogurts.

Of course, your doctor is going to know what is best for you.

I know that quiet a few of us has had an energy drink at least once. I can honestly say I never have. Most of these drinks are targeted to college students, and i've seen some target athletes. This is where my concern lays.

Energy drinks are loaded with caffeine, sugar, and some have herbal products such as ginseng, taurine, guarana which are also natural stimulants.

We all know that caffeine is a diuretic and leads to fluid loss, so when your drinking an energy drink your not only getting the caffeine, your also getting 3 other stimulants
as well. This is not good for athelets especially.

Once the athlete starts playing, they will start sweating more than usual due to the high
and the energy drinks will not replace fluids and nutrients lost.

Here are some warning signs of dehydration:

Early: thirst, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness

Advance: increased hert rate and body temperature, decreased urinating and sweating, muscle cramps, nausea and tingling of extremeties.

Severe: vomiting, confusion, dim vision, and in really severe cases: seizures.

I've researched nutrition information for you so you can compare.:
1) Pepsi®: 25 mg caffeine per serving*; **100 calories 2) Starbucks® Espresso: 35 mg caffeine per serving (1 oz); 5 calories 3) Cocaine®: 280 mg caffeine per serving; 70 calories 4) Diesel®: 110 mg caffeine per serving; **110 calories 5) Pimp Juice®: 105 mg caffeine per serving; 140 calories 6) Red Bull®: 80 mg caffeine per serving; **110 calories 7) Rockstar®: 79 mg caffeine per serving; **110 calories

What comes to mind when you think of a Vegetarian? Do you think of someone who eats salads all day? Do you think of someone who protests all day on the slaughtering of animals?

Did you know that some people are vegetarian due to dietary problems? As we get older, sometimes our body has a hard time digesting meat. I'm not a vegetarian,I think that meat is an important part of our diet. So why I promote a vegetarian diet? It's a good diet. Vegetarians if they follow the diet, they get plenty of vitamins, protein and fiber.

This type of diet is getting more and more popular, which is mostly in part of PETA and PETA 2 (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals). I am a member of PETA, but not because I think we should all be vegetarians, but because I am against animal cruelty.

At my restaurant, Love Your Heart, I serve foods for vegetarians. Also, I serve regular meats, and foods, as well as foods for diabetics, gluten-free, and lactose intolerant.
I believe in portion control, and using as much as fresh fruit and veggies as possible, whenever we can. Did you know there is another way of making sausage gravy other than using the grease from the sausage and you can't tell the difference.

There is no way, I could ever go with my two weaknesses.... Pasta and Steak. I just eat them in moderation. So until you try a healthier diet, don't put other people down because of it, they may have no choice, it would be no different from someone telling a lactose-intolerant person that they are stupid for not wanting to drink milk, they may have no choice but to drink soy or almond milk.

If you want to sample healthier food, come on in and we will take care of you.

In the words of Michael Layne from MDL Coffee and Tea: We will treat you so many ways, you are bound to like one of them.Melanie Nobbe, CDM,CFPP

STRESS EATING

Are you stress eating? That is what it's called when we eat for any reason such as stressed, upset, depressed. What do you do to control this kind of eating?

Here are some tips which I hope will help.

My personal favorite thing to do although I do the rest of these is I pray, however that is my own personal way of dealing with stress, because I know it will make me stronger once i'm through the problem at hand.

However, when you're under stress, you may find it harder to keep up healthy-eating habits. Also, during particularly stressful times, you may eat in an attempt to fulfill emotional needs, which is sometimes called stress eating. And you may be especially likely to eat high-calorie foods during times of stress, even when you're not hungry.

To combat weight problems during stress and reduce the risk of obesity, you need to get a handle on your stress. When you feel less stressed and more in control of your life, you may find it easier to stick to healthy-eating and exercise habits. Try these stress management techniques to combat stress-related weight gain:

■Recognize the warning signs of stress, such as anxiety, irritability and muscle tension.

■Before eating, ask yourself why you're eating — are you truly hungry or do you feel stressed or anxious?

■If you're tempted to eat when you're not hungry, find a distraction.

■Don't skip meals, especially breakfast.

■Identify comfort foods and keep them out of
your house or office.

■Keep a record of your behavior and eating
habits so that you can look for patterns and connections — and then overcome them.

■Learn problem-solving skills so that you can anticipate challenges and cope with setbacks.

■Practice relaxation skills, such as yoga, massage or meditation.

■Engage in regular physical activity or exercise.

■Get adequate sleep.

■Get encouragement from supportive friends and family.

If you try stress management techniques on your own but they don't seem to be working, consider seeking professional help through psychotherapy or counseling.

Trimming the Fat

Ever heard the expression “trim the fat”? Most of the time it’s used to illustrate a process of cutting back on excess or unnecessary expenses. Take a closer look at this expression. Why is the word “fat” used instead of extra, excess, or unnecessary? Maybe it’s because most people can related to trying to get rid of unwanted body fat. Or maybe it’s because people get “fat” when they aren’t as involved in the decision making in their life (ie. Skipping workouts, eating the wrong food, or neglecting important sleep patterns). I think the message is much deeper than that. The bold reality is that “fat” is expensive no matter how you cut it.

Fat is one of the most expensive components in the human condition. In order for your body to create fat, you must eat more food than you expend in energy. When you eat too much, or the wrong types, food your body stores it as fat. Now that you have paid for the fat to be stored, you also have to pay to deal with the fat.

This can be as minor as paying for a new wardrobe to fit the bigger version of you. Or it could be as major as paying for the triple bypass surgery you needed when your heart couldn’t deal with the excess fat. The medical field is a multi-billion dollar business that primarily addresses the side effects of fat. Doctor visits, medications, and operations are typically used to treat fat once you have already built it up. These forms of “trimming the fat” are EXPENSIVE!

Not to mention that your new health insurance premiums can put a hole in the wallet now that you are a higher risk with your fat. Did you know that by cutting down by as little as one blood pressure medicine that you can save as much as it would cost you to be a member at a health club? But when it comes to health, the majority of people justify not spending preventative money and say a little prayer that it won’t cost them big bucks down the road. NEWS FLASH: the more fat you get the harder it is to deal with, the less energy you have to deal with it, and the more money you end up spending on it.

So why am I “chewing the fat” on prevention versus post symptom fat treatment? I am tired of hearing people argue that they don’t have the money to spend on preventive “fat busters” like health club membership. Fat prevention is like car maintenance. You either choose to pay the small fees of frequent oil changes (in this case health club memberships) or you pay for a new engine (expensive open heart surgery)once it locks up from sludge build up when the oil breaks down. It is true that you can choose to change your own oil (you can workout on your own at home) to save money, but the bottom line is that your engine will still breakdown if you do it wrong or forget to keep up with the maintenance. While I have never seen any in financial distress from paying for oil changes, I have seen many people file bankruptcy over blown engines and open heart surgery.

When it comes to your health, the best way to get in shape is to never get out of it. Do yourself a favor and find a way to pay the small monthly fee instead of crossing your fingers that you don’t have to deal with a life changing expense down the road. Can you afford not to “trim the fat” starting today?

It's Grilling Time!!!

It's grilling time once again. Some of us grill outdoors all year long. Here's a question.... Do we think of the same food safety for grilling as we do when we cook inside?

Whether you are cooking out our inside, remember these simple and basic food safety rules.

1. When at the market, purchase your meat last and have it bagged separate, I even have them sack my poultry separate from pork and beef. This helps in preventing cross-contamination which could lead to a food-born illness.
2. You need to keep your meats cold. I usually take a cooler with ice to put the meats in after I buy them.
3. Plan to make the market your last stop, because you don't want perishables thawing out that way.
4. When you get home, immediately put them in the fridge.
5. If your not going to use it right away, put it in the freezer.

When your ready to grill, wash your hands first thing. Make sure the meats are completely thawed, so it will cook more enenly. When I thaw meats I put them on a pan in the bottom of the fridge so if it drips, it won't be on my other foods, or i'll run it under cold water.

When you take it out to the grill, make sure you only take what you plan on grilling at that time, and keep it at 40 degrees or lower.
Also, use a different platter for the cooked meat than the one you had the raw meat on.

Follow these simple rules to make sure your doing as much as possible to prevent a food-born illness.

Poultry 165 degree f,
Beef, Veal, Lamb, Steaks:
medium rare 145 degrees f
medium 160 degree f
All pork 160 degree f

Most of us already these things. Some of us may get to eager and just start grilling. If you follow these simple steps, you can have fun and know you did what your part in preventing your friends and family from getting sick.

Last week I gave out tips on how you can get a good workout while you are work. Now it is time to help you finish off the workout trifecta (at the gym, at work, and at home). This week I will focus on easy tips that lead to a healthy and happier you without leaving the comforts of your own home. Instead of giving you specific exercises like I did last week, these will be more like fitness guidelines that you can utilize while in your abode.

Millions of American’s spend a large portion of their at home time in front of the television. Whether it be in bed or on the couch, TV time is primarily a large waste of time. Now don’t get me wrong, I like my Simpsons and Criminal Minds, but I still try and make use of this time to get in a quick mini-workout. So here is Tip #1: Workout during the commercials. The commercials are just annoying advertisements that you don’t pay attention to so use that dead time to tighten those buns and abs. You will be surprised how much benefit you can get out of doing exercises during commercial breaks during a 30-minute show.

I consult with many health seekers that fall of the fitness wagon at home when it comes to beverage consumption. Millions of empty calories are consumed in sodas, beer, and other non-essential liquids while at home. Since they come conveniently packages in cans or bottles, people are more likely to pop a can open than they are to pour a glass of the same beverage. So here is Tip #2: Only get drinks that are made in a blender. Now that may sound weird but it helps on two fronts.

First and most important, you are less likely to overindulge in wasted calories. Adding chopped ice makes your body feel full more quickly therefore you typically consume less. This tip also helps eliminate boredom drinking. Since it takes more time for smoothie preparation and cleanup, you are less likely to drink as often since it isn’t as easy as popping the soda tab. This tip also encourages healthier drinking. Milk, juices, and fruits typically make up the bulk of blended drinks. I have seen very few people use soda and beer in blenders. Yes there still are alcoholic drinks available, but if you drink most of beverages from the blender you will find that you are more prone to use juices and fruits.

Today’s final tip is well help your body be at its best. Tip #3: No TV’s or radios in the bedroom. Millions of people fall asleep to the sound of some late night TV programming. Not only does this cause you to stay up later and get less sleep, the noise also disrupts your sleep cycle. Without going into too much explanation, your body only truly recovers when it is in deep sleep (known as the REM cycle). You are not able to get into this high level of deep sleep if you have noises distracting to you. It may be easier for you to fall asleep with the tube on, but it won’t be as recharging if the background noise keeps you from reaching deep sleep.

If you utilize these three simple tips then you will see results a lot quicker. Sometimes your health isn’t about what you do, it’s about what you don’t do. By utilizing these tips you should spend less time in front of TV (or at least less lazy time), minimize wasted liquid calories and consumption, and help your body recover from your time at the gym. These tips are way harder to stick to than any workout program in my opinion, but the results don’t lie when you combine them with a fitness program and balanced nutrition.

From a business owner’s perspective it is crucial to be prepared for anything that the market throws your way, be it drastic changes in consumer spending habits or changes in market competition. Your business has to be resilient and ready for anything. Why is it that so many small to medium businesses do not put a disaster plan in place for their business data? In almost all cases, business data is pivotal to the everyday function of the business. When you think about business data you think of client spreadsheets and accounting files but these days it goes much deeper than that. So much of a business’s day to day function involves a computer; sensitive data can also include emails, case management files, time clock and payroll information, contact lists and even pictures. My point is, in your business there is more data you would miss in the event of hardware failure, software glitch or natural disaster than you might initially think.

Backing up your business data is as important as overall security of an organizations computers, servers and networks and should be treated as such. Almost all businesses that suffer from a major data loss go out of business. It is extremely difficult to resurrect a dozen years worth of data while maintaining everyday business obligations.

My first series of writings will be on the topic of data disaster prevention. Over the next couple of weeks we will discuss different backup options available, important questions to consider in choosing from those options and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
